GST invoice template for UI/UX designers
UX work happens in phases (research, flows, wireframes, visual design, handoff), and clients often want to pay phase by phase. An invoice that mirrors those phases lets a product manager approve it without a call, because each line matches a deliverable they remember seeing in Figma.
This template is built around a phased product design engagement, with a separate line for a design-system build and an hourly line for post-handoff support. It uses SAC 998314 (IT design and development services) at 18%, which most software-facing design work falls under.
Example ui/ux designer invoice

What to get right on a ui/ux designer invoice
- Bill by phase. Invoice discovery, wireframes and UI separately and tie each to a Figma link or file version. Phase-wise billing also aligns with how startups release budget.
- Make handoff a line item. Developer handoff, spec notes and design QA take real time. Listing them stops them being treated as free.
- Separate the design system. A component library is an asset the client will use for years. Price it on its own and note whether you are transferring ownership or licensing it.
- Include research costs. User-testing incentives and recruiting panels are real costs. Show them as at-cost lines with receipts when you advance them.
How ui/ux designers usually bill
Product design is billed per phase on fixed scopes, by the day for embedded work with a product team, or as a monthly retainer for continuous design. Startups often prefer milestone invoices tied to sprint demos.
The place of supply decides the tax type: Karnataka to Maharashtra is an inter-state supply (IGST). See CGST vs SGST vs IGST for the full rules, or see how invoicing works in Karnataka.
UI/UX Designer invoice FAQs
Which SAC code applies to UI/UX design?
Design of apps and websites is generally billed under SAC 998314, IT design and development services, at 18%. Non-digital specialty design, like print and packaging, falls under 998391.
Do I charge IGST or CGST+SGST for a client in another state?
Another state means IGST, the same state means CGST plus SGST. For B2B services the place of supply is normally the location of the client as shown on their GSTIN. Use the client's registered address from the right GSTIN.
Should I mention who owns the Figma files?
Yes. A short line such as "Source files transferred on full payment" or "Licence for use within this product only" on the invoice or notes clears up ownership before there's a dispute.
